The label leading Spain’s streetwear scene: Wear? Magazine interviews Human Society

When you think of the big streetwear nations, Spain isn’t the first place that comes to mind. Yet, one brand is leading the way for their country and creating a culture of their own.

Human Society are undoubtedly the kings of Spanish streetwear and despite not getting their inspiration from their homeland, they are connecting with people across the continent.

“When I started the brand I didn’t think about doing anything very innovative or revolutionary,” Mike Bruner tells Wear? Magazine, but the label has turned into a home for strong statements and unique illustrations.

Their ‘F**k Fake Friends’ hoodie was a massive success, with various copies being produced by other labels while the ‘Sorry, you’re not special’ release received more than 90,000 likes on Instagram.

“My mind, like any creator, has a different way of seeing things, a different style of creating art and content, and I’m just finding my way and my style, making Human Society unique.”

And, the label’s individuality has come from far and wide.

“There’s nothing from Spain that inspires Human Society, but after visiting Japan last year, it inspired me.

“I came back with new ideas and motivation. Human Society is a canvas and Japanese street style, Harajuku, has to be a part of that.”

The Asian influence has helped Human Society to achieve the support of 80,000 followers on Instagram, many reverberating with the dark, emotive energy surrounding the brand.

“Sometimes I see certain aspects of life in a somewhat pessimistic way, probably due to issues during my life but I’m not depressed in person.

“Topics such as love or trusting people around me, it’s a bit complicated, but I only transmit my way of seeing the world. It may be a bit dark sometimes but I cannot censor it, ideas come out of my mind and that is the final result.”


The messages that Human Society stands behind are pretty hard-hitting too. Phrases such as ‘You think everything is under control but you are totally lost’ and ‘Nobody cares life on social media’ form part of their SS19 collection. Such statements certainly make people question the culture.

Furthering their uncompromising announcements, Human Society’s direct and upcoming SS19 arrives at a time where the label are venturing into the unknown.

Having released scarfs, bags and other accessories to avoid being “pigeonholed into making t-shirts and sweatshirts their whole life”, Human Society are expanding across different layers of the fashion realm.

“The brand has a parallel project called Les Enfants Créatifs (L.E.C), which is a division of Human Society; the ‘premium’ side.

“I don’t want to call it ‘high fashion’ since that would be a little arrogant but, you know, I want to focus it as a design brand.”

Aiming to have both projects running in 2019, L.E.C will draw on premium materials and details, incorporating European and Japanese influences, while Human Society operates as a more contemporary streetwear label.

“A great campaign is in the works and I’m really excited to launch L.E.C and work with both brands, there’s still a long way to go but I’m sure this will go far.”

Wear? are sure both brands will continue to pop during 2019 as well. Whether it’s Human Society or Les Enfants Créatifs, Mike’s empire is certainly making a case for people to stand up and pay attention to the Spanish streetwear scene.
